Harper Woods incorporated as a city on February 19, 1951, carved from the remaining land of Gratiot Township, with its charter taking effect that October 29. Named for the wooded land along Harper Avenue, the city's population had already jumped from about 800 in 1940 to roughly 9,000 by 1950, packing nearly all of its housing construction into a single postwar decade.
